Agitation Resources

Side-Entry Mixers

ASN Group

The ASN Group is Agitation Resources’ line of side entry mixers for bulk storage and other large volume industrial applications. These units mount horizontally through a nozzle or flange in the tank wall to provide circulation, blending, temperature uniformity and, where the application permits, solids suspension. Side entry mixers are often considered when tank geometry, structural limitations or overhead access make a top mounted arrangement impractical. They can also provide an effective circulation pattern across large tank diameters with a compact drive arrangement outside the vessel.

Engineered Solutions for Large Volume Applications

The mechanical design of a side entry mixer is based on the required power input, tank geometry, operating level and rheology of the stored fluid. The mixer can be installed at a selected horizontal or downward angle to establish the desired circulation pattern, improve tank coverage and limit bulk fluid rotation. Drive configurations may be direct drive or gear reduced. The shaft and impeller are sized for the applied torque and overhung load, while the impeller geometry is selected for the required circulation and power draw. Typical applications include chemical storage, water treatment and pulp and paper stock chests.

Mechanical Reliability and Hydrostatic Sealing

Because a side entry mixer is installed through the tank wall, its seal must operate against the hydrostatic head at the mounting elevation in addition to any vessel pressure or vacuum. Packing arrangements and mechanical seals are selected according to product compatibility, operating conditions and allowable leakage. Shutoff arrangements are available to support seal service without draining the vessel. Drive components and bearings are selected for the calculated shaft loads and for a calculated L10 life based on the expected operating duty, supporting planned maintenance and reliable long term operation.

ASN Group: Side-Entry Mixers

The ASN Group covers side-entry agitators for large-volume tanks, used where a top-entry arrangement is impractical because of vessel height, structural support, or cost. Each assembly is configured for the tank diameter, operating level, nozzle arrangement, and process conditions.

We review shaft loads, impeller flow, seal conditions, and any shutoff requirement before specifying the unit.

Agitation Resources ASN Group mixers are built for side-entry service in large process and storage tanks, where a top-entry arrangement is impractical.

  • Typical duties: blending, solids suspension, and heat transfer in large storage or process vessels.
  • Sealing options: packed stuffing boxes or mechanical seals, specified for the pressure or vacuum the vessel sees.
  • Construction: shafts, bearings, and housings sized for the radial loads a side-entry shaft carries.
  • Drive arrangements: gear-reduced or direct drive, selected for the speed and torque the duty requires.
  • Motor and impeller options: NEMA and IEC motor frames, with impeller geometry chosen for the flow pattern the process needs.

Agitation Resources has been designing industrial agitation equipment for more than 25 years, with side-entry units applied in chemical processing and water treatment.
